Spirit Tours was concieved as a collaboration between David Hardy and Siebren Versteeg in the summer of 2004. Beginning with a simple technological mediation of the driving experience (see Spirit Tours 2004), the project has become a catalyst for an investigation of the notion of journey, A concept that continues to dissapear from a contemporary experience which delivers and creates a demand for immediacy and consumability.
This conflation of the physical and the virtual into a real time mediated or abstracted notion of real is further explored as the project continues to manifest into videos, installations, and happenings which describe or sell the often unrealised event of a "Spirit Tour". In addition a continuing portfolio of nostalgic relics and merchandise build an ongoing mythology which manifests both as motivation and detournement from the artistic preconceptions of the collaborators.
